2020 Vision

My name is Sydney Barrow, and I am currently a freshman at Florida State University. I plan to double major in advertising and studio art. Much of my artwork is inspired by elements of psychology and sociology. I have spent the last several years creating a portfolio that follows a chronological storyline of how I came to be and how I am learning to navigate a world full of inequality and hardship. Most notably, I am learning to communicate with others from differing backgrounds, facing unprecedented social and political issues, and attempting to cope with existential confusion. My piece “2020 Vision” focuses on the issue of political polarization, as it has increased significantly in America in recent years. Such separation and division are incredibly isolating. The gauze covering the model's eyes expresses people's ignorance towards the hardship that others experience, or the refusal to acknowledge any uniting or relatable characteristics with people outside of one’s chosen group. The attempt to break through the bondage symbolizes the need to communicate and unite with "the other side" despite how emotionally challenging it might be. The red and blue paint splatter serves not only as a nod to the two most prominent political parties in America but are also reminiscent of blood stains and reference the unfortunate violence that occurs during many political conflicts. My primary medium is charcoal, the only medium that allows me to achieve the grittiness and high contrast that serve as a vessel for many of my pieces’ complex meanings properly. I hope “2020 Vision” forces its audience to self-reflect and consider their own role in our ever-changing culture and society. If any piece of mine can effectively serve as a call to action, my job as an artist will be fulfilled.
